The South African government has ordered a probe into an incident in which a mob of alleged protesters stormed the house of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) provincial Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube at the weekend, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday. The attack, which occurred at night, saw about 100 people breach the security at Dube-Ncube’s house before hurling insults and intimidating theatrics” at her and her family.

Ramaphosa condemned the incident and welcomed the decision by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government to launch an investigation into the attack.

“We must condemn and resist any and all attempts by anyone to render our society lawless and chaotic,” Ramaphosa said.

He called on South Africans to respect the rights of others, including the “right to be free from all forms of violence from either public or private sources.”

“These rights apply to each and every citizen, including elected leadership or public officials, who choose to serve our nation, and their families.”

The attack on the KZN premier comes amid rising tensions in South Africa where citizens are up in arms against central government and municipal officials over rising crime, electricity shortages, corruption and poor service delivery.

This has seen daily protests across the country over the past few years.
