Health officials in the North West Region, in a report, gave the final death toll from the explosion on February 11.

 

The bomb explosion at the Nkambe festival ground in Donga Mantung division  after the 58th Youth Day parade left one person dead and 83 injured. According to Dr Kingsley Che Soh, the North West regional Delegate for Public Health, the deceased was a 14-year-old girl from Nyanji Secondary School.

Emergency services transported 83 injured people to Nkambe Regional Hospital. Critical cases, five in all, were transported by helicopter to the Bamenda hospital on February 13, 2024. They were treated in the solidarity ward before being stabilised. “Of the 13 other serious cases, two were discharged and 11 underwent orthopaedic surgery,” reads the report on the treatment of victims following the explosion of an improvised explosive device.

According to the same document, which covers the period from February 14 to 21, 64 moderate cases were recorded. Their injuries were described as contusions, lacerations, blunt trauma to the torso and psychological trauma. All 64 cases were discharged from the Nkambe Regional Hospital and placed on oral medication.
