These figures are from a report published by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNCHA) regarding the crisis rocking the North West and South West regions.

One of the sectors hardest hit by the security crisis in the North West and South West regions is that of education. The closure of schools has been a feature of the situation as a result of  separatists fighters scourges.

Since the start of the 2023-2024 school year for instance, according to a report published by UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) last February 15, 246,354 children have been unable to attend school. The UN agency says of the 6,970 schools identified in the North West and South West regions, 2,875 have not opened since the start of the current school year. The closure rate is 41%. OCHA also reports an improvement compared to the 2022-2023 school year. A year ago, it was found that 54% of schools in these regions remained closed.

In addition to the closure of schools, separatists fighters are also responsible for acts of violence against students and pupils during large gatherings for exemple, such as those marking the beginning of the new school year in September and the last Youth Day celebration…
