Two students of the Government Bilingual High School Mouloundou in the East region have been arrested in possession of four elephant tusks, an AK47 and ammunition.

Arnaud Zékou Bel and Alexis Bépoundé were arrested in Bertoua last week alongside a certain Dara Darien, notorious poacher from Congo. They were nabbed by forest and wildlife guards of the Lobéké National Park.

A service note from the Congolese police indicated that 32-year old Dara was a rogue police officer’s errand boy. He also affirmed to Cameroonian investigators that he was only a messenger. He said the notorious arms dealer sent him to deliver ammunition to the two students in Cameroon and collect the sum of 470 thousand FCFA from them.

The town of Muloundou, in the Boumba and Ngoko division of the East region has been a point of convergence for poachers and ivory traffickers from Cameroon and Congo in recent years. In the past two years, hundreds of ivory have been confiscated from traffickers in this locality. War weapons and munitions have also been seized from poachers in many operations carried out by eco-guards and soldiers of the wildlife ministry and the ministry of defence respectively.
