Cameroonian football icon, Samuel Eto’o Fils has been named the United Nations International Children’s Educational Fund,UNICEF, Goodwill Ambassador for Cameroon.
The 36 year old football icon was officially took the engagement with UNICEF as Goodwill Ambassador for the youth in Cameroon on Tuesday March 21, 2017 at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex.
During the event, Dr.Felicite Tchibindat, UNICEF’s Country Representative, said the UN agency picked Eto’o because of his outstanding achievements, inspired by his background and humble beginnings. She added that it was UNICEF’s decision to take Eto’o Fils success story to encourage Cameroonian youth to be assiduous and daring.
Samuel Eto’o Fils who had been UNICEF ambassador in spain while he played for the Spanish Barcelona football club, lauded decades of efforts of the organisation in shining the light on children. He declared his desire to provide humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in Cameroon.
As part of his day-long activities with UNCEF in Yaounde on March 21, he gave inspirational talks wit thousands of youths at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sport Complex and visited one of the homes of abandoned children in Yaounde.
Samuel Eto’o Fils, told a press conference later in the evening how shocked he was when he visited the home for homeless children. He launched a call for every Cameroon to get engaged in raising funds to construct a new befitting home for the children. He noted that if Cameroonians have the will to make the construction a reality, the structure christiened Maison des Maman(losely translated as “Mothers’ Home” will see the light of day.
Besides promising to contribute to the construction of the home,noted that though his schedule requires him to spend more time abroad, he will always be available whenever UNICEF needs him. “UNICEF will always be my priority” he said.
