Despite their victory over the weekend with gold medals in Lusaka (Zambia), two Rwandan athletes Yves Nimubona (men) and Martha Yankurije (women) still need to secure qualification to represent the country at the Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan, a
sports source revealed Monday to APA in Kigali.Despite her victory at Lusaka Marathon late Sunday, Marthe Yankurije, a female athlete who runs in the 10,000m and 5,000m categories said she still need to get a minima that can help her qualify for the Olympic Games.

The issue of lack of training also worries Rwanda’s Olympic Committee which suggested federations should be facilitating athletes to be given green light to resume training to better prepare for future competitions which are reaching crucial stages of qualifications.

The 2020 Summer Olympics also known as Tokyo 2020 is scheduled from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

The event was originally due to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, but it was postponed in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and will not allow international spectators.

Mandatory doping tests were also being severely restricted by the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.
