The Rwandan Ministry of Education has closed twenty Technical Education and Vocational Training (TEVT) schools for failure to give sufficient practical lessons. APA can report in Kigali on Monday.”Depending on the inspection  results, the ministry of education has closed 20 TVET schools for  failure to meet standards,” a statement issued by the Ministry of  Education in Kigali said.

According to the ministry, most of the closed schools are private.

The  TVET schools are closed at the time the government is on course to have  60 percent of students completing the Nine Year Basic Education join vocation schools by 2024.

Rwanda has, for the past few years, embarked on investing in and promoting TVETs as alternative institutions providing  hands-on skills required for the job market.

However, the available figures from the government’s Workforce Development Authority (WDA) indicate that only 52 percent enroll in them.

Experts in education sector say that school management and leadership are a major challenge in technical and vocational education and training in Rwanda.
