Rights group wants Tchiroma sacked over Far North killings

The Network of Human Right Defenders in Central Africa RHEDAC has called on the Minister of Communication Issa Tchiroma Bakary to resign over what it describes as spreading out unverified information to the population.

The Minister of Communication has been on the receiving end since backtracking from initial claims that the viral video showing soldiers killing women and children in the Far North region of Cameroon was fake.

After confirming in a communiqué last weekend that seven soldiers had been arrested in connection to the killings, Issa Tchiroma has come under severe criticisms with many calling for him to step down or be sacked.

“Everything utterance from the Minister of Communication is a lie…how can we be or work together with people who are always lying…how can we trust the army with all what is happening…” Barrister Alice Nkom of Redhac said in a press conference on Tuesday.

“We will continue our findings to expose the masterminds and make sure they are tried…I suspect a fake trial because I heard the Minister of Defence say they will be given a fair trial which was not the same declaration when secessionists were arrested….” Barrister Alice Nkom added.

RHEDAC said the actions of security forces in conflict hit North West and South West regions of Cameroon cannot reinforce the much desired peace preached on a daily basis by the government but a sincere and frank dialogue would return things to normal.
