South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared war on high-level corruption in the country, declaring in parliament on Thursday that the “days of state capture are over”.Responding to a question from main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen on whether he would support a draft bill submitted by his party to bring an end to “cadre deployment,” Ramaphosa said cadre deployment was a worldwide phenomenon used by political parties in government.

“All parties, including the DA, make political appointments. But I assure you that we are working on professionalising the administration.”

“Days of state capture are over” in South Africa, the president assured the opposition leader.

The ruling African National Congress’ cadre deployment has lately been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

It is being blamed for the party’s poor performance and the unprofessionalism of those it deployed in government and other state agencies – including maladministration that has led to allegations in the abuse of state funds and resources.
