Stocks opened slightly higher Thursday, even after the government said 4.4 million more workers filed for unemployment benefits last week as layoffs sweep the economy. The S&P 500 rose 0.5%. The weekly report has become one of the main ways to measure how severely the shutdowns aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus are damaging the economy. Over the last five weeks, roughly 26 million people have filed for unemployment, or one in six workers. Oil prices rose again from rock-bottom lows they reached earlier this week. The House is expected to vote on another bill Thursday to provide relief to business and workers.
