Fritz Ntone Ntone, government delegate to the Douala Urban community has presented a project aimed at structuring drainages to produce energy for households.
The project according to government officials will organise a market for the 1,300 m3 of drainage sludge produced on a daily basis in the economic capital, and of which barely 50% is actually processed; to produce energy for households and thus protect the environment.
Even though the initiative is globally approved, discussions between the programme stakeholders over how to raise the funds necessary to its implementation are still underway. While some recommend the collection of a cleaning tax, others are mentioning the possibility of public-private partnerships, which will require the involvement of local governments, households and companies operating in the drainage sector.
