Today Wednesday March 6, special ceremonies will be organised in Churches across Cameroon to mark the first day of Lent, a period of 40days fasting which begins on Ash Wednesday.

Christians who observe Lent use it as a time for prayer and penance. By observing Lent, they are said to remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who withdrew into the wilderness and fasted for 40 days.

The fasting season this year ends on Saturday, April 20.
