The Mfoundi High Court in Yaounde has rejected Ayah Paul’s application for unconditional release. Ayah’s lawyers had filed an application at the Supreme Court stating amongst other things that the advocate general was illegally arrested on January 21, 2017 at his residence.
Barrister Ndong Christopher, one of the defense counsel says arresting Ayah on Saturday which was a weekend, is in contradiction with the Criminal Procedure Code which forbids arrest of someone on public holidays or weekends unless that person is caught committing a crime. The lawyers of Ayah Paul have hinted they could apply against the rejection.
Ayah Paul who is also president of the Popular Action Party, PAP, has now spent two months in custody at the defense State Secretariat. All efforts by his family to get him released due to poor health has equally been rejected.
