Multiple protests broke out on Tuesday in major cities across Ethiopia’s Amhara State following the killing of hundreds of ethnic Amharas in what is believed to be ethnically motivated attacks.Tens of thousands of protestors who took to the streets condemned the killing and displacement of ethnic Amahras.
The latest demonstration took place in Ataye town where undisclosed numbers of ethnic Amhara people were killed allegedly by the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) over the past three years.
The Oromo and Benishangul Gumuz regions of Ethiopia have witnessed the worst killings, rights activists say.
Over 250,000 people are reportedly displaced from the affected areas of the Amhara region.
Protesters in Bahir Dar, Gonder, Kombolcha and Woldia cities chanted slogans like “stop killing the Amhara people” and “Justice for the Amhara People”
The attack, which is now increasingly seen as clandestinely coordinated, ravaged the city of Ataye and damaged others like Karakore, ShewaRobit, Antsokia and Ephrata – among others.
The protesters further accused president of the Oromia Regional State-Shimeles Abdissa of spearheading the massacre of ethnic Amhara people in Oromia State.
One slogan read “Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Shimeles Abdissa must be charged at the international court”.
