The daughter of former South African president Nelson Mandela succumbed to coronavirus, the family has announced.
According to the family, Zindzi Mandela, who was the youngest daughter of Mandela and anti-apartheid activist Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, tested positive for Covid-19 on the day that she died.
She died at a Johannesburg hospital in the early hours of Monday at the age of 59.
“Simply by virtue that there was a positive test, we are therefore obligated to function and work within the framework of the existing regulations related to such cases,” her son Zondwa Mandela said.
The late Mandela was South Africa’s ambassador to Denmark and will be buried on Friday.
