At least five people have been killed and similar number injured on Tuesday night after militants suspected to be linked to the Boko Haram sect attacked the town of Assigahsia in Cameroon’s Far-North, APA has said.

Going by APA, the assailants took advantage of the cover of darkness to sneak into a very busy part of the small town notwithstanding the strong presence of the Cameroonian army along the border with Nigeria.

Assigahsia had already been the scene of an overnight raid blamed on the jihadist movement on 11 January overnight, which left one person dead and another wounded.

Unlike the previous months, such attacks by the militants have seen a decline in their intensity in Cameroon’s Far North.

Speaking on the issue on the eve of the National Youth Day, President Paul Biya claimed the insurgents have lost their momentum.

“Boko Haram’s destructive capacity has been significantly reduced, thanks to the joint action of the defense forces and the Cameroonian populations” he said.
