A gendarme officer was at the weekend killed along the Bamenda-Ndop road by unidentified gunmen, local sources have said.

The circumstances leading to his death are unclear but reports say he was shot by gunmen who blocked the road at Sabga hill on Saturday morning.

Sources say the gunmen had mounted a checkpoint along the road checking the identification papers of passengers before discovering the gendarme officer who was in plain clothes. He was pulled out of the bus and shot by the men before his corpse was abandoned on the street.

Security forces immediately stormed the area after getting news of the incident and serious gun exchanges ensued though details of the casualties are still not known.

Several villagers living theb area are said to have fled for fear of military repraisals as has been the case with several other villages in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.
