Françoise Abanda has won her first Grand Slam tennis match.
The 20-year-old Montrealer, who won three qualifying matches to earn her spot in the main draw, on Monday morning, defeated Frenchwoman Tessah Adrianjafitrimo 6-3, 6-4. Adrianjafitrimo, ranked 269th in the world, received a wild card entry into the tournament.
Abanda was successful on 73% of her first serves and recorded three aces in the match, including one on the final point. The 195th-ranked player in the world was broken two times, but broke her opponent’s serve four times in a match that lasted one hour and 28 minutes.
Abanda’s next opponent will 11th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
Westmount’s Eugenie Bouchard, who is battling a right ankle injury, is slated to play her opening match tomorrow against Japan’s Risa Ozaki on Tuesday.
