Mauritania’s national football squad, also known as ‘Mourabitounes’ will face the Fennecs of Algeria on June 3 in a friendly match, according to official sources.“To become great, you have to rub shoulders with the older ones”. It was in these terms that the Communication Officer of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (FFRIM), Brahim Sow Deina, announced the news on Facebook.

The Mourabitounes, which are on an upward path, will participate in their second consecutive African Cup of Nations (AfCON) that will take place in Cameroon in 2022. During the 2019 edition, in Egypt, the team led by Corentin Martins put on a good performance by gaining two points (goalless draws against Angola and Tunisia).

But that was not enough to qualify for the second round as Mauritania were initially defeated by Mali (4-1). In recent years, the FFRIM, headed by Ahmed Yahya, the second VP of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has been moving heaven and earth to put his country’s football on the continental scene.

By confronting Algeria, at the Mustapha Tchaker Stadium in Blida (south of Algiers), the Mourabitounes hope to grow faster. The Fennecs, the reigning African champions after beating Senegal(1-0) in the last final of AfCON in Egypt, remain on an unbeaten streak of 24 games (friendly and official). A record on the black continent that Djamel Belmadi’s men share with Egypt.
