Ethiopia has planted five billion tree seedlings over the past two months as part of the national Green Legacy Initiative, the country’s Prime Minister has disclosed.Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the country has successfully achieved its target of planting five billion trees ahead of the one month rainy season, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Wednesday.

He expressed gratitude to all Ethiopians for actively responding to the call for the greening campaign to leave their footprints all over the country’s green legacy initiative.

Ethiopia is set to plant six billion trees in the 2021 rainy season.

The premier affirmed that Ethiopia will avail 1 billion trees to neighboring countries as per its aspiration to help green the region too.

 Starting last Ethiopian rainy season, the incumbent has introduced the Green Legacy Campaign aimed at planting 20 billion trees in five years. 

During the first year of the campaign, the government and the public at large have made a great history having smashed the world record by planting 353 million tree seedlings in a single day.

This year’s campaign came a few days after the horn of Africa nation celebrated the successful completion of the initial filling of its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the River Nile.
