Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe, Cameroon’s secondary school education minister has reacted to the teachers’ notice to go on strike March 27. Minister Bibehe said he has conveyed the teacher’s worries of unpaid salaries and poor working conditions to his colleagues of finance and public service.

Bibehe blamed the aforementioned concerns on the dysfunctioning of Cameroon’s operation antelope application whose validity has been wanting for eight months now. Operation Antelope is one of Cameroon’s software systems in managing human resource and state’s balance sheet.

Bibehe however said he will personally follow up with finance minister in order to ensure the teachers concerns are diligently treated. He equally promised to bring the concerns raised by the teachers to the attention of the inter-ministerial ad-hoc committee responsible for finding lasting solutions to teachers’ problems I Cameroon.

The teachers under the umbrella of “collectif des enseignants indignes du cameroun” had on March 6 addressed a letter to the ministers of secondary education, finance and public service. In the letter they denounced the non-payment of salaries and the non-integration of teachers into particular status. The teachers equally complained about the slow integration of salary grade review, integration of part time teachers into the system and the revalorisation of documentation and research allowances. The teachers had said they are ready for dialogue without which they will push for a strike action come March 27.

The secondary education minister’s reaction, according to Jack Bessala, the teacher’s spokesperson is a relief.  Bessala said the teachers however expect full implementations and actions on ground before March 27 without which the announced strike action will push through.
