At least 1 villager lost his life with dozens injured during thunderstorms and heavy rain in Northern Rwanda late Tuesday, several correspondents reported Wednesday quoting a senior local administrative official in the region.Meteorologists say more storms are on the way in the coming days, with officials urging people to remain vigilant and stay indoors.

The executive secretary of Kinigi Sector, Innocent Twagirimana told local media that the dead included a 25-years-old young man who was tending to the field.

In several remote rural areas which are prone to disasters especially in North and Western Rwanda, officials and meteorologists are using text messages or mobile apps to warn local residents of potential lightning activity based on sensor data and forecasts.

In March 2018, at least 16 people were killed and dozens injured when lightning struck a Seventh-Day Adventist church in Nyaruguru, a mountainous district in Southern  Rwanda.

The weather accident in the mountainous region near the border with Burundi took place  while parishioners were then at a church service.
