Cameroon’s National Police has announced a new initiative aimed at addressing the issue of dual identities among its citizens. In a recent statement, the Delegate General for National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguele, invited individuals with dual identities or other filiation-related issues to submit requests to regional police delegations.

The move comes in response to President Paul Biya’s call for a resolution to the problem of dual identities, which has hindered some citizens from registering to vote. “I am well aware that some of our compatriots continue to face difficulties in registering on the electoral lists due to the lack of national identity cards. Many of them also find themselves, of their own doing, in situations of dual identity,” President Biya stated in his end-of-year address.

To facilitate the process, the National Police has established a system where individuals can submit their requests directly to one of the country’s 10 regional delegations. The required information includes the applicant’s name, contact number, email address, and postal address.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the country’s identification system. The National Police is also set to launch a new secure identification system that will allow for the issuance of national identity cards within 24 hours.

While the move is seen as a positive step, some have raised concerns about the inconvenience it may cause for citizens living in rural areas, who may have to travel long distances to reach a regional delegation. To address this, there have been calls for local police stations to be authorized to collect requests and forward them to the regional level.

The initiative is expected to streamline the process of obtaining national identity cards and help reduce the number of citizens who are unable to exercise their right to vote. It also marks a significant step towards improving the overall security and efficiency of Cameroon’s identification system.
