Linguistic experts in Yaounde have called on Cameroonians to preserve and promote the multicultural nature of the country.
The experts made the call during the commemoration of the International Mother Tongue Day on February 27. During this year’s event placed under the them; “Linguistic diversity and multiculturalism count for sustainable development”. Youssouf Hadidja Alim, Cameroon’s Minister of Basic Education outline the different measure taken by government to promote the use, and teaching of the different mother tongues in the country. To her, the measures such as the creation of the multilingualism commission, has help the country’s youth to better understand their culture.
Other experts took turns to hail the vitality of Cameron’s languages and urged the citizens to take advantage of such vitality.
It should stressed that international bodies such as UNESCO have stressed the importance linguistic diversity plays in sustainable development. UNESCO is committed to promoting mother-tongue multilingual education.
