The paramount ruler designate of Buea HRM Robert Esuka Endeley has called on all chiefs and the population of his chiefdom not to yield to calls for a boycott of the May 20 celebrations in the city.

In a statement signed by the Vice Chairman of the Royal Traditional Council, Luma Stephen Njoke, the Paramount ruler elect has called on the chief to show patriotism and loyalty to the state and republican institutions that are upheld by the constitution of the country.

The statement was read on Wednesday May 8 during the second preparatory meeting for the National Day celebrations amidst rumours of calls for a boycott from a section of other chiefs.

“Contrary to divergent expressed by various individuals in their respective capacities, concerning the celebration of this year’s National Day in the South West Regions, we of this chiefdom value and stand on the supreme general interest shared by the majority of Cameroonians of goodwill,” the paramount ruler said in a statement.

This is a new twist in the drama between the Buea chiefs and the administration after some of the chiefs demanded an apology from the governor for ordering them to march with their subjects on May 20, describing it as a disrespect to their traditions and customs.

The Divisional Officer of Buea Paul Wokam Kouam has equally weighed in threatening ‘sanctions’ against the President of the South West Chiefs Conference Mafany Njie for his ‘malicious’ and ‘odious’ attitude.
