Camwater has detected over 42 water leaks in its distribution network in Douala following a night-time inspection. The utility company launched the “Zero Leak” operation last January 31, 2025, to identify and repair leaks in its system.

Of the 42 leaks found, 12 have been immediately repaired, nine have been temporarily plugged, and 21 require more extensive work. Camwater has committed to repair the remaining 58 leaks and completing the ongoing interventions.

This initiative comes after a major water pipe burst in Yaoundé on January 27, causing significant damage and disrupting Water supply to several neighborhoods. The incident highlighted the urgent need to address the issue of water losses in Cameroon’s urban centers.

Non-revenue water, or water lost before it reaches the customer, has been a persistent problem for Camwater. According to the company’s director general, Blaise Moussa, over 53% of the water produced is lost due to leaks and inefficiencies in the distribution system.

The “Zero Leak” operation is a significant step towards reducing water losses and improving the efficiency of Camwater’s operations. By addressing these leaks, the company aims to reduce water wastage, improve water supply reliability, and ultimately lower costs for consumers.
