The United States Embassy in Yaounde has welcomed the decision by the Head of State President Paul Biya to drop charges against opposition leader Kamto, allies and other supporters of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party.

In a statement issued Saturday October 05, 2019, the United States Embassy in Yaounde acclaims the decision to discontinue charges against Prof Maurice Kamto, President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party, his allies alongside some of his supporters.

“The United States Embassy welcomes the decision to drop charges against Maurice Kamto and other members and supporters of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement arrested following election protests earlier this year.” Part of the statement says.

According to the statement, this decision from President Paul Biya is a constructive step toward ensuring a less tensed political atmosphere in the country and affirming the Government’s will to “respect fundamental freedoms”.

Nonetheless, the US Embassy expressed the wish to see more actions that will bring lasting peace in Cameroon’s North West and South West regions.

“We hope further measures will be taken in the wake of the recently concluded National Dialogue leading to the restoration of peace in the North West and South West regions.”
