Cameroon marked the 49th edition of the country’s National Day Thursday May 20 with a symbolic hoisting of the flag at different command levels nationwide in the absence of the traditional military parade and the usual fan fare and pump due to the deadly COVID-19 pandemic which continues its world torment.

In Yaounde, the solemn ceremony took place at the Headquarters Brigade and the National Gendarmerie Headquarters in military standards and under strict respect of Coronavirus barrier measures in the presence of the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in Charge of Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo and other top military officials.

At the civilian level, Cameroonians gathered at the Marie Queen Basilica in Mvolye, Yaounde where a national mass was officiated and prayers made for peace to reign back in the country.

This is the second consecutive year the country is marking its National Day without the usual fan fare and pump, plus the military and civilian parade due to the deadly Coronavirus pandemic which has claimed over a thousand of lives in Cameroon.

This year’s edition was commemorated under the theme “Army and the nation: Together let’s overcome health, security challenges and preserve peace, solidarity and prosperity in Cameroon.”
