The Governor of the South West Region, Bernard Okalia Bilai has said sanctions will be meted out against those responsible of killing a teenage school girl in Buea on Thursday, October 14.
Protests erupted across Buea on Thursday morning after à gendarme officer at a check point in the Molyko neighbourhood in Buea reportedly shot at a vehicle, killing a teenage school girl in the process.
Eyewitnesses say the gendarme shot the vehicle at close range as it was about to park at the side of the road with the teenager dying on the spot.
The incident forced the angry population to descend on the scene and administer mob justice on the gendarme.
They later marched with the mortal remains of the teenager through the streets of Buea to the Governor’s Office where they met the Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai.
Addressing the crowd, the Governor said appropriate sanctions will be taken against all those found guilty of the teenager.
“I am fighting here (in the South West Region) for children to go to school. How is it that a child who is going to school is killed ? It is a shock. Rest assured that I the Governor will ensure that those who committed this act will pay,” Bernard Okalia Bilai said before calling on the crowd to remain calm and deposit the child’s corpse at the mortuary.
However, the Governor’s words did little to calm down the crowd that returned to Molyko in protest, invading the Molyko Omnisports Stadium where they have been chanting.
