Joseph Beti Assomo, Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defense, has said Cameroon has terrorism problem coming from the  threats posed by militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

Minister Beti Assomo made the remark during the Moscow Conference on International Security in Russia. The conference is an annual event, which brings together defence ministers, representatives of international and non-governmental organisations and military experts. This year, it is focused on the defeat of terrorists in Syria.

Speaking on the sidelines to the event, Beti Assomo said; Cameroon has a serious problem of terrorism. “We have been fighting for four or five years now an Islamic organization which has now turned into a terrorist group without any religious doctrine”.

“About eight or ten countries are concerned with this Boko Haram problem. That’s the main problem that we have in the region, especially in my country”.

Quizzed on the Anglophone crisis, Assomo said; ” two regions have decided to take arms and to fight against the central government to get what they call their independence.

“There are secessionist group who want to divide the country. And we cannot accept that. It is unacceptable”.

Speaking on possible solutions to the crisis, Joseph Beti Assomo said it requires both a security and a political solution. ” The forces of law and order have to protect the integrity of the state and the people, while dialogue between the government and the people continue, be they secessionists or terrorists, they still remain Cameroonians”.
