An award to honour the first ever Cameroonian female medical doctor, Professor Gladys Ejomi Martin who passed away on July 16 in Douala has been created.

The award created by the Cameroon Medical Women Association, seeks to honour the fallen doctor’s memory and is open for female medical practitioners who are excelling in specific field in the health domain.

Call for entries for the award will be officially launched on November 1 while winners will be announced during a ceremony that will hold in March 2021, the Cameroon Medical Women Association announced.

Professor Gladys Ejomi Martin died exactly four months and 11 days after receiving the excellence award from the Cameroon Women’s Medical Association for her contributions in the field both in Cameroon and the rest of the world.

She received her award on March 5 from the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Marie Thérèse Abena Ondoua.

“We are delighted to have honoured this pioneer and vibrant African lady while she was alive. It is an honour for us to create the Prof. Gladys Ejomi Martin prize,” Professor Anne Esther Njom Nlend, President of the Cameroon Medical Women Asscociation said.

Professor Gladys Ejomi Martin served as served as Senior Lecturer in Community Health and Pediatrics at the University Center for Health Sciences (Cuss), University of Yaoundé, Cameroon – Consultant pediatrician, CHU, Yaoundé; Head of the Center for Nutrition Research, Institute for Medical Research and Study of Medicinal Plants at the Ministry of Scientific and Technical Research.

Her rich career that spanned close to sixty years saw her equally hold important positions out of the country as well as win several international awards.
