The former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania is tasked with monitoring the situation in Chad, which has been governed by a Transitional Military Council (CMT) since the death of President Idriss Déby Itno on 20 April.

The appointment of Mr. Ould Abdallah is part of the initiatives of the International Organisation of Francophonie (OIF) to support the transition process in the central African country.

Ahmedou Ould Abdallah will lead a high-level Francophonie delegation to N’Djamena in the next few days to meet the new authorities and Chad’s political and social actors, according to an OIF statement.

The Secretary-General’s Special Envoy will work in coordination with international partners, in particular the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), with the aim of contributing to a peaceful, consensual and inclusive management of the transition.

The conclusions of his mission will be examined by the Permanent Council of Francophonie (CPF).
