Human rights lawyer and activist, Felix Agbor Balla has called on the government of Cameroon to open investigations on the killing of the former Catholic Education Secretary Rev. Fr. Alexander Nougi Sob.

Father Alexander Sob Nougi who was the parish priest at the Sacred Heart Parish in Bomaka, a neighbourhood in Buea was reportedly caught by a stray bullet in Muyuka on Friday,  the Vicar General of the Buea Diocese, Rev. Fr. Asek Bernard had announced in a statement.

However, the circumstances of his death are still unclear with fingers pointing both at separatist fighters as well as government soldiers.

“I join with other members of our civil society in calling on the authorities to establish facts which led to the death of Rev.Fr. (Alexander Nougi) Sob,” Felix Agbor Balla, activist and founder of the Centre of Human Rights and Democracy in Africa said.

“I also urge government to show seriousness in bringing the crisis to a peaceful resolution,” he added.

The human rights lawyer also stressed that the killing of the priest is a reminder of the impunity that reigns in Cameroon, accusing the government of ignoring extrajudicial killings, human rights violations and the killing of unarmed civilians.
