The Special Branch Police Commissioner in Konye Sub-division, Meme Division of the South West Region of Cameroon, who was reportedly kidnapped last week, has been liberated.

Commissioner Christopher Ekidi Ewang regained his freedom over the weekend after close to one week in captivity.

News of his abduction by some unidentified gunmen suspected to be elements of the Ambazonia Defence Forces last week spread like wild fire. Many inhabitants of Konye were bemused by the news, given that, the Commissioner had just been drafted into the Sub-division to instil law and order.

According to information gathered, Commissioner Ekidi Ewang was serving with the National Public Security Forces, but was later redeployed to the Special Branch of the Police Forces. His abduction caused a lot of panic to the local administration, given that, it came barely a few days after he was introduced by the administration to the local population.

During the public introduction, the local administration urged the population of Konye to resume their commercial activities, bearing in mind that their security is guaranteed.

After the Commissioner’s abduction, local press reports went viral that Ewang’s abductors were demanding for a ransom for his release. It is not yet known if the Commissioner’s family or the Government negotiated for release.

But it should be stressed here that the rate of kidnapping for ransom, especially in Meme Division is on the increase. Many traditional rulers in the Division have fled their palaces for fear of being abducted.

Recently, the Prefect of Meme, Chamberlain Ntou’ou Ndong, cautioned the population to stop paying ransoms as it goes a long way in financing the activities of separatist forces.
