Rigobert Song, former captain of the indomitable lion has been invited as a special guest to this year’s university games starting April 22 in Bamenda.

Song was chosen alongside Sarah Etonge, populay known as queen of the mount Cameroon race of hope.

Rigobert Song who arrived Cameroon from France on April 1, 2017, six months after suffering a celebro-vascular attack had announced that he would be visiting Anglophone Cameroon in order to thank the people of the North West and South West regions for praying for his healing when he suffered a stroke.

His announcement at the time had attracted many criticism from many english speaking Cameroonians who took to social media to criticise the move stating that Song must have a hidden agenda. Many were of the opinion that Song should have first condemned the rapes, killings and abductions connected with the anglophone crisis before organising a tour in the regions.

According to them the former captain’s visit is part of President Biya’s plans to restrain the ongoing anglophone crisis which has plagued socio cultural activities for months. It is still not clear how the people of the Northwest region will receive the football star given that he is now coming to the region in the capacity as guest star in the university games.

The games will feature athletes, trainers and officials from some 18 State Universities and private higher institutions across the country. It is scheduled to run from the 22nd- 29th April 2017. Students will be participating in several sports disciplines such as athletics, volleyball, football, handball, Basketball, Judo, wrestling, table tennis, lawn tennis and paralympic sports for the physically challenged.
