The 8th edition the Francophonie games has ended in Abidjan with Cameroon winning 21 medals to grab the 7th position.

Five of Cameroon’s medals were in gold.  France emerged first with 53 medals with 24 in gold. During the closing ceremony the game’s flag was handed to Canada which will host the event in 2021

The Francophonie games were instituted in 1989 during the second summit of Francophonie Heads of State and it was agreed that the games will alternatively take place in a country of the north followed by one in the south and so on.

It is organised once every four years to reinforce friendship amongst countries that share the French Language through sporting and cultural competitions.

The first edition took  place in the cities of Casablanca and Rabah in Morocco in 1991.
