The players who were hiding in the Russian village of Ordzhonikidze in Crimea, have been fined and ordered to leave the country

15 Cameroonian footballers who absconded a return flight after taking part in an international competition in Russia, have been fished out from their hideout by border security operatives. The players of Yaounde II FC took part in the Crimean Football Union (CFU) Open Winter Cup in February this year.

Crimea Inform News Agency (C-inform.info) reported on March 29 that the Cameroonian club players were escorted to the airport after the tournament. 15 of them escaped from the airport while the rest of the team returned to Cameroon. According to the Crimean news agency, the players stayed in Russia until their visas expired.

The security officers who arrested them last week, handed them over to state authorities who sent them to a Crimean court. Among them was a Cameroonian-born sportsman who holds a Belgian nationality.  The court fined them 2000 rubles, (circa 21,000 FCFA) and ordered them to leave Russian territory within 10 days.

It is worth noting that it is not the first time Cameroonian athletes are vamoosing after taking part in international tournaments. Five Cameroonian athletes disappeared in London, England after taking part in the 2012 Olympic Games. There is however, no gainsaying the fact that almost all Cameroonian athletes practising locally, dream of traveling abroad for better salaries and infrastructure that would enable them explore their talents to the fullest.
