The sum of over FCFA 11 million has been raised by friends and partners of Eden Radio, a Limbe- base community radio outfit, The Voice weekly newspaper has reported. This was during the inauguration of the new studios and laughing of a community support fund for Eden Radio which has been moved to the headquarters of the Eden Media Group at Mile II, Limbe from the old site at the summit of Bakoko hill.

The fundraising ceremony was chaired by Dr. Besong Ogork Ntui, project coordinator for Rumpi project with the Director General of the National Oil Refinery, SONARA, Ibrahim Talba Malla as Chief launcher. Other top dignitaries also answered present including amongst others, the Government Delegate to the Limbe City Council represented by his Chief of Cabinet, Mbua Samuel, the General Manager of Cameroon Development Coorporation, CDC represented by the head of the Communication Department, Manyanye Paul Ikome, the MP for Fako East, Hon. Etombi Ikome Gladys, the MP for Kupe Muanenguba, Hon. Bob Ngujede amongst others.

Presenting the new Eden radio studios to the public, the chief executive officer of Eden Media Group, Chief Zachee Nzonhngadembou revealed that “Although it may not be noticed physically, the new studios are actually linked to the antenna, at the crest of the signal hill, wirelessly”.

Chief Nzohngandembou further explained the reason behind the community support fund stating amongst others that public support to private media organs is still paltry.”

He said as community radio proprietors are less likely to be able to better the radio’s needs especially in the improvement of service delivery, partnership with the private sector and local communities is essential for the society to optimise benefits from this important communication asset.

The Chief Launcher of the ceremony, Ibrahim Talba Malla said the present of the rank and file of the society was eloquent testimony of the important role the media plays in the society.

“The presence here of our distinguished members of the executive and legislative arms of government shows the determination and continuous efforts, under the auspices and directives of the Head of State, President Paul Biya to enhance our democracy with the positive contribution of the media as the Fourth Estate to nation building,” Talba Malla said before officially laughing the community support fund with a personal sum of FCFA 5 million. He was closely followed by Ashu Batuo, a pharmacist with a donation of FCFA 4 million. Hot on their heels was the MP for Fako East constituency, Hon. Etombi Ikome Gladys who also donate FCFA 1 million.

Contributions rained in from members of the high table as well as other guests to the tune of FCFA 11.2 million with pledges from representatives of institution to establish a win-win partnership with the radio.
